As part of our continuing efforts in building collaborative relationships with similar organizations in combating the worldwide HIV/AIDS epidemic, Brother Jeff’s Community Health Initiative (a program of Brother Jeff’s Cultural Center) will send a delegation to Kenya in September 2010, on a fact-finding mission. Team Brother Jeff will be visiting the Kenya National AIDS Council, NYUMBANI (Children of God Relief Institute), Uplifting Men and Youth project sites in Kibera and Korogocho and other AIDS service organizations.
The information gathered will be used to assist in developing outreach models to bring services directly to individuals living in remote and rural areas. The two weeks in Kenya will also be used to promote safe sex practices and to saturate the target groups with relevant messages on how HIV is transmitted and, more critically, raise the level of individual commitment required for prevention.
Working side by side with local leaders will not only teach us about culturally appropriate services, it will give us the ability to improve community acceptance of the services. These concepts will be invaluable when implemented in our own community.
